When in Rome, do as the Romans do

October 5th, 2009 by George Notaras

If you are in “Rome“, the above is a golden rule to follow, if you really care about surviving there. That also means that you will most probably have to do things in different ways than you had initially planned or in ways that are against your principals or code of conduct. But, in return, your adaptation to that environment will be smoother and, at least, your presence there will be pleasant to others. On the other hand, by getting that much off your track in order to act as a “Roman“, has a tremendous negative side-effect: you practically waste a lot of time by doing things you do not approve or consider stupid. Trying to find the good balance between smooth adaptation and as little as possible waste of time is very difficult, if not impossible. In the end, it is you who decide what is more important: others or your time.

If not in “Rome“, well, it doesn’t really matter…

Note: Throughout this post, the words “Rome” and “Roman” are used metaphorically in accordance to the popular quote.
