Upgraded to WordPress Coltrane

December 17th, 2008 by George Notaras

Just before the outage, and having read fog’s comments about the newly released 2.7 version of WordPress, I upgraded G-Loaded’s engine. Once again I used my WordPress updater script. This script has worked well for a considerable number of upgrades, so, although it is still in alpha stage, I will probably make a public release soon. As for the new WordPress version, it seems like a fine release as far as functionality is concerned. Also, I like the new administration interface.

Of course, coltrane “claims” to be able to update wordpress itself (check out the `upgrade’ button in the tools menu, on the left). They haven’t released an update since 2.7 so i can’t vouch for it, but your script might be a little too late :)

Well, I had written the script long before WordPress had the feature you refer to. On the other hand, yeah it might be a bit late for a public release, but definitely not “too late”.

Assuming that the live upgrade feature of wordpress probably requires write access on the WordPress files by the web server, which is probably not the case in most WordPress setups for security reasons, I’d say that performing live upgrades while maintaining a good level of security would involve:

    1. Enable write access on the Wodpress files for the web server user.
    2. Perform the live upgrade
    3. Remove write access from WordPress files.

Taking into account the time needed to accomplish the tasks above, I’d say that the script is by far superior to “live upgrade”. The upgrade is not performed by the web server, but locally from the shell account which more secure. Moreover, it makes a backup of the database and the filesystem before making any upgrades. This makes it very easy to revert back to the previous state in case anything goes wrong.

So, I would say that I am with those who use scripts to upgrade WordPress or do it manuallyusing SSH or FTP.
