Greek Basketball Team – Congratulations!
After a series of eight wins in the 2006 FIBA World Championship, the Greek Basketball Team proved that it can perform and adapt to each match extremely well at top level, despite the fact that it didn’t manage to win the title match. Our extremely poor performance (shooting, rebounds, turnovers) inside the field, in comparison to previous game stats, and the fact that the Spaniards played excellent basketball – their defense completely destroyed our game – led to this result (70-47) in the tournament final. Maybe, in our minds, the actual title match was the one against the USA Team…
I know there is no Greek on this planet who is satisfied with the silver, especially after the great victory over the powerful USA Team in the semi-finals. That was the “mother of all battles” for the Greek Team, the ultimate test, because of the undisputed abilities of the opponents, so I trully believe that we definitely deserved the gold. But, we should have fought for it as we fought in every other match. This is the first time we make it that far in a world championship and this, and only this, Coach and Team proved that they can just do it! This is what makes me extremely happy.
I, as a fan of this game, congratulate all teams that made it to the final-four stage. Congratulations Spain – we will be back soon :-) -, congratulations USA, congratulations Argentina, but, above all, I congratulate the Greek Team and Coach for their exceptional character and potential and for the great moments they’ve given us during this tournament! What they have achieved is by far better than what was expected. Congratulations by heart!!
PS: There are many things (good and bad), that happened in Greece during this tournament and I would like to blog about, but, unfortunately, I don’t have the time for this. Maybe at some other time…
